moving over

Hi we are moving to Spain at then end of the year and after a long time searching I have narrowed the areas down to 3 that I am interested in. Almoradi, Albatera and Catral. I will be bringing 2 children over that will be attending school. I want somewhere were there are expats but not overrun (for example La Marina), obviously with doctors, schools bars. Could anyone give me their opinions on the places I have mentioned. I am gettin so confused as to where would be best for us....

Catral

Hi, I live in Catral and it has a great mixture of cultures but is not over run! The town centre is great with everything you need. Both my children go to school here and are doing really well. Their are lots of great bars so the first few weeks we were here I think we tried all of them! Almoradi is a nice town too but has more English than Catral. Hope this helps.

Vodafone - Special Promotion

If you are currently using Vodafone as your mobile phone provider and you are on Pay As You Go, they have a special promotion on at the moment where you can receive 50% extra on your top ups. To take advantage of the offer simply text REGALO to 22566. There is no cost to you for this service!

Thanks for this. I am on Vodafone and have done this and had a text back confirming it (I think! it was in spanish! but seemed to confirm 50% regalo!!!!)

Another Bazaar?

Wondered if anyone knew what the new big building near Mercadona at Atalaya Park is going to be. I have heard rumours its going to be (yet another) Chinese Bazaar?

Benijofar

Yes, the sign has gone up and it is ANOTHER chinese bazaar....gonna feel like we are in China soon and not Spain with the number of bazaars and woks popping up everywhere....

Hi - for those who feel so strongly about so many bazzars (including me) maybe its time to get political and badger the "powers that be" so as to insist upon a variety of retail outlets, but then again im not sure how spanish law works in terms of this, so maybe its a case of so long as you can afford the rent you can sell whatever you like ? Dont get me wrong I think the Bazzars are very useful and do serve a purpose, but its getting absolutley ridiculous now !

From what I understand there are ´tax breaks´ offered to the chinese people who open woks or bazaars? Maybe this is why there are so many! But I agree WHY do we need another one - most of the stuff you buy there doesnt last long although you can find pretty much everything you need! They are becoming a blot on the landscape now though especially when they are SO big - I feel sorry for the residents of Atalaya Park having to now look out at that monstrosity - at least Mercadona was built slightly to the side of the plot of land!

The sign that has gone up on the big building now says Merca Benijofar - I did see something in one of the papers a while ago advertising for stallholders for a new indoor market in Benijofar. Perhaps it is not a bazaar after all but maybe an indoor market?

Commented Benijofar Life in Benijofar 2011-05-12 10:11:32 UTC

Well I for one would prefer it to be the indoor market than yet another bazaar....

Commented Richard in Quesada 2011-05-13 17:16:27 UTC

It looked like a bazaar to me when we drove past today ! Lots of boxes being unpacked with the usual stuff that they sell....

Charges made for paying by debit/credit card

On the 30 March 2011 Which? issued a surcharge super complaint to the Office of Fair Trading over the fees retailers charge consumers for paying by credit or debit card. Low cost airlines are among the worst offenders. They asked for upfront costs, fair charges and for retailers to absorb the cost of the fee to process a debit card payment.

To show your support please add your name to their pledge. Why not ask your friends and family to do the same? The more support they have, the stronger their case.

I have pledged my support to this also - the charges made by some of the airlines are ridiculous and something should be done about it. There is no way that the charges they make are what they pay to the credit card companies, its just another way of making more money and make cheap flights become expensive.

Have just seen this post - I noticed when checking the Ryanair website yesterday for some flights that they are also now charging delay/cancel levy of £2!!!! Yet more fees added to the final price....

Commented Bev Manson in Benijofar 2011-05-14 09:24:16 UTC

I agree - and if you are taking luggage with Ryanair they charge ridiculous amounts. Beware with hand luggage too as they check this now - we travelled the other week and one of ours was a little too wide to fit in the baggage checker but they wouldnt let us swap anything over to the other cases even though 2 of them were half empty....they wouldnt even let us move the clothes around as there was room at the top of the bag (one of the kids had packed it herself and packed it wide rather than spreading it around and we didnt notice)....cost us €35 to check it in - i try not to fly with them now if i can help it.

Fratellis

We had a lovely meal at Fratellis Italian on the square in Benijofar last night. Set menu for around €12 which was starter, main and dessert plus coffee and a drink. Was very busy and nice atmosphere. Would recommend.

cost of beer and cigs

Hi could anyone give me a rough idea as to how much a pint of beer and 20 cigs would cost in almoradi??? is it still much cheaper than England?

Almoradi

Hi there,
The general cost of living in my opinion is still cheaper than the UK. In terms of the two things you mention, cigarettes are on average 3-4 euros a pack and a pint you can pay anything from 1.50 -2.50 euros. The biggest difference is Council tax, which is on average 5-6 times lower than the UK. Hope this gives you a little insight in some of the costs.
